Making a stove for a winter tent
A winter fishing stove is a must. And of course, in the shops there is a wide range of different designs for tents, but many tourists and fishermen prefer to make them on their own. And for this they have a number of reasons. I want the product to be convenient to carry, easy to assemble and use. Read more about how to make a wood-burning stove for winter fishing with your own hands, read further in the material.
Wood stove design
Winter and camping for most tourists are associated with frozen legs and the need to warm up in a tent at night. The stove will always provide the inhabitants of the tent with a stream of warm air. As a result, you will calmly fall asleep and wake up warm.
If you also need to cook food, then sometimes 2 ovens are installed to solve both problems faster:
- one in a tent for heating;
- the second on the street for cooking.
Metal models are usually made of steel. They retain heat longer, provide more uniform heating. The thicker the steel sheet, the better it resists deformation and the longer it cools, which is good at night when the furnace is turned off. Sealed steel doors will remain so throughout the entire period of operation and will not allow smoke and combustion products into the tent.
Did you know? The typical weight of a steel furnace with a tent is the full load for an ATV or pack horse.
Technically, the furnace itself consists of:
- the chamber in which combustion occurs;
- cavities and channels through which air moves;
- chimney through which combustion products are discharged.
The stove is also equipped with a cold air inlet and a chimney damper. All this helps to control the flow of air, increasing or decreasing it. It is desirable that the legs and pipe are disconnected from the product. During transportation, they are folded inwards, and in the parking lot they are mounted in place.
In some store models, the legs are adjustable and this is useful if you have to put the tent on an uneven area. In the design, it is desirable to provide a flat top surface for heating water and cooking.
Important! The furnace is installed on a heat-insulating sheet so that in case of coal getting from the furnace to the floor, a fire hazard situation is not created. It will also be convenient if the oven is equipped with handles for moving.
Any tent has an opening for a hot chimney (chimney). In addition, the area around the furnace is always protected by a refractory rug in case of hot coals. Some tent manufacturers recommend rolling back the base of the tent and placing the product directly on the ground.
Not only hot carbon dioxide, but also sparks rises through the chimney pipe from the furnace. If the pipe is short, then they can get on the roof of the tent and cause a fire. To prevent this from happening, the chimney pipe is made long so that it is at least 2–2.5 m long. As long as the spark flies along this path, it will go out. Therefore, the chimney acts as a spark arrester.
Safety also implies that all objects that may catch fire should be kept away from a working stove. Another danger is carbon monoxide. It should go strictly into the chimney. And the tent itself should be designed so that clean air regularly gets into it.

Dimensions and characteristics of the tent stove
Ovens come in many sizes and configurations. In order not to be mistaken in the calculations, you need to know exactly 3 main factors:
- the size of the tent to be heated;
- total load capacity of the equipment with the furnace;
- route duration.
Important! Leaving a working stove at night when no one is watching the fire is prohibited. If you want to leave it turned on, then distribute the hours of duty so that someone watches the flame and the influx of clean air.
The approximate dimensions of a camping or winter fishing stove will be as follows:
- pipe diameter - about 86 mm;
- the size of the body (furnace) - 25 × 25 × 50 cm;
- the volume of the furnace is 30 l;
- the number of pipes for the chimney - 3;
- pipe length - 50–70 cm;
- pipe with a bend - 1 pc.;
- approximate weight - 5 kg.
Of course, when making a stove with your own hands, your dimensions may be different. The main thing is to worry about the performance of the structure after assembly.
Homemade potbelly stove
A potbelly stove in the early 20th century was called a metal wood-burning stove, which was installed indoors. The combustion products were discharged through the chimney to the window. The camping stove has the same principle of operation, only has a more compact size. Fuel in both cases are chips, sawdust, small pieces of wood. The average temperature of the side surface reaches 100-150 degrees, which should be remembered when you cook food.
Important! If there are problems with welding galvanized steel sheets, grind the welded areas. Removing the galvanized layer will allow you to make seams, but will slightly reduce the useful life of the product, as it will be more susceptible to corrosion.
Instructions for the manufacture of the furnace:
- Think over the model. Draw a drawing or diagram, providing the exact dimensions of the finished product. Mark the metal sheet and pipes with a marker where you want to make metal cuts.
- In the upper part, make a hole in diameter coinciding with the pipe, which will become a chimney.
- Cut the pipe into several parts so that they can be folded inside the stove during transportation. Make cuts at one end and bend the resulting petals inward. This will allow you to insert one end of the chimney into the other.
A small stove is called a pinhole, which you can take with you on a summer or autumn hike for 2 people. It is a small cylinder. In its lower part there is a grate, on the side there is an opening for air supply and combustion. A grill is installed on top of which a container with food is placed.
Did you know? It is believed that the heat transfer of a round or oval furnace is higher than square. But tourists cannot use the cylinder-shaped model for cooking.
A hole is also made on the side into which fuel will be thrown. As such, cones, chips, small twigs are used. The furnace can be equipped with legs that provide a gap between the lower grill and the ground. The legs also guarantee stability and give the opportunity to sleep freely on burnt ash.
Shchepotchitsa can be made of rectangular, cylindrical, triangular and any other design. The main thing is to determine whether it is needed in a particular campaign, since for cooking more than 3 people, it is too small. And of course, it is not suitable for winter heating of the tent.To make a grate, you need a sheet of galvanized aluminum, stainless steel or other metal. It is necessary to mark it, dividing into 4 walls, the bottom and the cover. Openings for air movement are made in the bottom and cover. In one of the side walls you need to create a door for filling fuel, and in the other - a hole for air movement.
But the simplest version of this design is a can. Holes are made around the perimeter in the lower part, through which air will move. At the bottom, a pair of holes are made for pouring ash. Fuel is placed inside the structure, and a grill is installed on its surface, on which a kettle or kettle is placed.
How to make a stove in a tent for winter fishing with your own hands
Making a furnace is not a complex process.But you definitely need to calculate the correct dimensions of the product. Otherwise, you can not get high-quality heating of the tent.
To make a homemade stove you will need:
- case or steel sheet from which the case will be welded;
- chimney pipe;
- steel legs;
- fireproof stand.
Of the tools needed:
- welding machine, if the body needs to be welded from a sheet;
- saw and scissors for metal;
- pipe bender.
The chimney for the camp stove will consist of metal pipes. For an accurate calculation of the diameter of the pipes, you need to know that it should be 2.7 times the volume in liters of the combustion chamber. In the previous section, the volume of 30 liters was taken for calculation. Then the diameter of the pipe will be 30 × 2.7 = 81 mm. If you use a pipe with a smaller size, then it will not be able to provide the desired traction.
The thickness of the chimney pipe will be 0.6–1 mm. Estimated total length - up to 2.5 m. A pair of pieces of pipe that are installed one in another will be needed. In addition to them you will need a pipe with a bend. To fix the structure, several clamps are needed.
Draft is the natural movement of air from the stove into the external environment along with the removal of combustion products. If it is insufficient, then the fuel will burn slowly, and if it is too large, it will disappear from the tent without heating it.
Traction is affected by:
- chimney design;
- Atmosphere pressure;
- air flow activity.
The easiest way to strengthen it is to install a deflector in the chimney. This is a sheet of metal folded in the form of a funnel and mounted on a pipe. When the air stream flows around the deflector, a zone of rarefied air is formed under it, enhancing the hood. And in the absence of wind, such a cap reduces chimney draft. In addition, it covers the channel from accidental debris entering it.
The operation of the furnace can be dangerous in two cases:
- tanning due to a spark on the roof of the tent or coal falling out of the furnace;
- poisoning by combustion products.
Preventing sunbathing is simple. It is enough not to place flammable objects near the stove, take care of the presence of a special stand under it and blocking sparks due to the length of the chimney. In addition, a burning furnace cannot be left unattended at night.
There will be enough time for which it will cool down almost until the morning. This is 5-8 hours, depending on what metal it is made of. So, a sheet of tin cools down the fastest, and steel will cool slowly over many hours.
As for the combustion products, oxygen is needed to burn the fuel. If it does not get into the pipe or there are few of it, then combustion will go slowly. And then you need to increase traction, creating an additional flow of air.
It is also important to remember that barbecue in the tent on the stove cannot be cooked, as well as other food. The resulting smoke and carbon monoxide do not enter the chimney, as they are inside the tent. And for their withdrawal, you need to open the doors and windows. If this is not done, then you can be poisoned by combustion products.
There are quite a lot of stoves for winter camping and fishing. But if you do not like the price or quality of the products offered, then you can always make a do-it-yourself stove from improvised materials to provide yourself with such necessary winter night warmth and comfort.
